EcoBiodiversity

Welcome!

EcoBiodiversity is a Newton South High School club that works with other non-for-profits to advocate for ecological biodiversity and practical solutions against climate change.

Our objective is to create rebuild and conserve biodiversity locally by planting native gardens in the green spaces of Newton! We also create pollinator shelters to promote native bees, butterflies, and other insects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this important?

Biodiversity provides functioning ecosystems which do many wonderful things such as supply clean oxygen, wastewater treatment and many more services! A variety of native plants provide shelter and food for indigenous wildlife such as pollinators. By taking those plants away, you are removing the niche for these animals which in turn affect the ecosystem they are in.

What are "pollinator houses"?

A not well known fact is that less than 10% of bees live in hives. The rest of those bees live either underground or in other wild nooks and crannies. Pollinator houses are structures that we build out of wood/any recyclable material where solitary pollinators can live and hibernate. There are only so many holes where these guys can hide so by creating these we create cozy homes.

What events do you host?

We do planting in the fall and spring while in the winter, we build pollinator houses. We also plan on hosting/attending webinars where students can learn more about how they can contribute to the cause!

Where do you get your funding from?

We partner with environmental organizations in Newton and they help us fund all of our projects. All new partnerships will be listed in the about us page.
