EcoBiodiversity
Note from the President
Welcome to EcoBiodiversity! My name is Armine, and I’m a student at Newton South High School with a passion for protecting local ecosystems and native biodiversity.
EcoBiodiversity is a space where young people can take real, hands-on action, whether it’s planting native gardens, building pollinator houses, teaching preschoolers about the natural world around them, or organizing local conferences focused on sustainability. EcoBiodiversity is about building community, inspiring curiosity, and showing that small actions can lead to meaningful change.
At the heart of EcoBiodiversity are three core values: conservation, education, and appreciation. We believe that by protecting our ecosystems, sharing knowledge, and fostering love for nature, we can inspire lasting change.
I hope you’ll take a moment to explore what we do and find a way to get involved. Together, we can grow something lasting.
Warmly,
Armine Freeman
President, EcoBiodiversity
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this important?
A diverse range of native plants provides critical food and shelter for local wildlife. When these native plants are removed or replaced with non-native species, the specialized habitats they support begin to disappear, leading to a ripple effect that disrupts the ecosystem. By protecting biodiversity, we help sustain the balance that allows everyone to thrive.
What are "pollinator houses"?
A not well known fact is that less than 10% of bees live in hives. The rest of those bees live either underground or in other hiding places. Pollinator houses are structures that we build out of wood or other recycled materials where solitary pollinators can hibernate.
What events do you host?
We do planting in the fall and spring while in the winter, we build pollinator houses. We also plan on hosting/attending webinars where students can learn more about how they can contribute to the cause!
Where do you get your funding from?
We partner with environmental organizations in Newton and they help us fund all of our projects. We plan on working with other non-for-profit and environmental organizations to advance our mission.
